In my mid twenty I wondered what it would be like for my mother if all of my siblings and I stopped contacting my mother. We’d let her be and get lost in the world alone. I could feel the cruelty creeping up on me as I thought of it, and that gave me an idea of writing the story from my mother’s point of view. I imaged her staring into a distance – waiting for her children to come home. A part of me was scared of what I might become. The other part was fascinated by the story of a woman who waited by the telephone for her children to call. There were a few instances that I took from real life situations and put them on the book. For example: when Catherine threaded to drown her first and second child in the well. That part came from my childhood when I was scared of my own mother who did what Catherine did in the book. She was tough my mother. But she was also cared for her family. I didn’t write the second part down. I thought I wanted to make her really cruel toward her children. I also combined her with her mother, my grandmother who hit my mother when she was younger so often that it left scars on her into Catherine character. Waiting For Them To Come Back was my first ever book. And I’m really happy to share with you all
